Cabinets Market Demand and its Growth

US demand for cabinets is forecast to expand 7.4 percent per year to $15.2 billion in 2014. Gains will be spurred by the rebound in housing completions from the depressed levels of 2009, reflecting the sharp declines in housing completions between 2007 and 2009. Although housing completions will remain below the level reached at their cyclical peak in 2006, the recovery will fuel above average gains in the residential cabinets market through 2014.

Kitchen cabinets, which represented about 80 percent of cabinet shipments in 2009, are expected to post the most rapid advances through 2014. The projected rebound in housing completions through 2014 will drive gains. Growth will also be supported by design trends that call for homes with more and larger-sized cabinets to store food products and kitchen equipment. Many homeowners will also install cabinets with such value added amenities as pull-out shelves, racks and lazy Susans to enhance kitchen convenience.

Shipments of bathroom cabinets are forecast to grow at an above average pace through 2014. Advances will primarily be supported by rebounding housing completions. Design trends that call for homes with larger master bathrooms and larger cabinets to store personal items and medications will also promote gains. Shipments of other cabinets, such as those found in offices, home entertainment centers, laundry and mud rooms, garages and other areas, are expected to rise more than three percent annually through 2014. Advances will be promoted by increasing use of cabinets in these areas instead of shelving.

Residential buildings were the largest market for cabinets in 2009, with about three-quarters of total demand. The residential market will continue to hold this leading position through 2014, given its greater intensity of cabinet use compared to other markets. While new housing will lead advances, the improvement and repair segment will continue to account for the majority of residential demand. Not only is there a large stock of older homes requiring cabinet replacement, but kitchen and bathroom renovation projects -- including the replacement of cabinets -- are often undertaken by homeowners to improve the aesthetics or add value to their homes.

Through 2014, demand for cabinets in the nonresidential market is anticipated to rise 2.8 percent annually. Concerns about price and performance generally play a larger role in cabinet selection than aesthetics in most nonresidential structures. Thus, cabinets are replaced much less frequently. Growth will be derived from continued institutional construction spending and a rebound in office and commercial construction spending. Rising shipments of boats and recreational vehicles from a low 2009 base will boost demand for cabinets in the nonconstruction market.

The US cabinet industry is characterized by relatively low levels of foreign trade, with imports accounting for less than five percent of demand in 2009 and exports approximately one percent of shipments. US foreign trade in cabinets is limited by many factors, such as the cost of shipping fully assembled cabinets and variations in style preferences between the US and other countries. Through 2014, cabinet shipments are expected to rise over seven percent per year, as domestic manufacturers increase production efforts to meet rising demand for cabinetry.

Data Center Development in the United States

Electrorack, a Legrand Group brand, recently posted its article, Data Center Development in the United States, on its ePulse Info Center at www.electrorack.com.

“We wanted to kick off our new article series with an article that discusses trends in data center development in the US,” said Todd Schneider, Electrorack’s Director of Marketing.  “The industry is dynamic and constantly changing, and so we felt an article that addresses development would be both appropriate and timely.”

Excerpt from Data Center Development in the United States:

Despite the slow economic recovery, a variety of statistics show that data center growth continues to expand. For example, a recent survey at the Fall 2011 7 X 24 Exchange Conference revealed that 72% of respondents will definitely or probably will build a new internal data center in the next 12 to 24 months, while 64% are looking to retrofit or expand their existing facilities. Regardless, the stagnant economy is spurring significant efforts to increase the efficiency of existing and new data centers.

Several large companies, for example, are opening data centers on the East Coast with a mind on utilizing the cooler weather and the availability of coastal water to handle rack overheating problems. The recent trend is to construct new data centers in areas where land is cheap and where there is water for both hydroelectric power and for server cooling.

“We look forward to contributing future articles on our ePulse Info Center,” added Todd.   “And we’ll be covering all the markets we serve, including the broadcast/broadband, military, and industrial markets.”

How Cloud Computing Will Impact Data Centers

Electrorack, a Legrand Group brand, recently posted its article, How Cloud Computing Will Impact Data Centers in 2012, on its ePulse Info Center at www.electrorack.com.

“As bandwidth issues arise, cloud computing will continue to be looked at as a potential solution,” said Todd Schneider, Electrorack’s Director of Marketing.  “And as cloud infrastructure gains acceptance, there will be increased emphasis on demonstrating return on investment.”

Excerpt from How Cloud Computing Will Impact Data Centers in 2012:

The year 2011 saw data centers moving cautiously in the direction of cloud computing, and many analysts believe that 2012 will see growth pick up as perceived barriers to adoption disappear. Companies are moving more toward creating private clouds and using public clouds as backup for overflow capacity.

Some experts are predicting that 2012 will see the growth of cloud computing and would increase with many companies moving away from traditional “box-centric” operations. While in previous times, companies tended to rely on running applications in specific data centers or on specific servers, cloud infrastructure allows any application to run at any location or on any server at any time.

“Initially there was hesitancy on the part of data center to adopt cloud computing models,” added Todd.   “However, Security SaaS options and SAS-70 compliance certification are helping to build confidence that cloud computing systems are safe for data center operations.  That, combined with general public acceptance, means cloud computing will only increase in 2012.”

The Quest for Efficiency

Electrorack, a Legrand Group brand, recently posted its article, The Quest for Efficiency, on its ePulse Info Center at www.electrorack.com. “In this economic climate, data center managers must be open to trying a variety of methods to increase efficiency,” said Todd Schneider, Electrorack’s Director of Marketing.  “Even established data centers can increase efficiency by simply evaluating and modifying a few key factors.”

Excerpt from The Quest for Efficiency:

Rising costs have data center managers searching for new ways to increase efficiency. Finding the most expedient solutions for efficiency will depend on factors like budget, space considerations, location, power and cooling options. Some of the alternatives available that involve software, hardware and combined solutions include:

• Utilizing the right software power management and monitoring system
• Centralizing data center cooling
• Designing for efficiency
• Planning for future space requirements
• Using virtualization and distributed networks
• Utilizing onsite power generation
• Analyzing life cycle costs

“Of course, everyone’s goals are to increase efficiency while minimizing costs,” added Todd.   “Identifying ways to optimize venting, humidity control, and free cooling are just a few of the solutions to achieve these goals.”

Green Enterprise IT Award-Winning Technology

Opengate Data Systems, the provider of the technology behind Electorack's CoolCirc-IT High-Density Heat Containment System, has been awarded the prestigious Uptime Institute 2011 Green Enterprise IT Award.

“As data center efficiency specialists, we are constantly reviewing advanced infrastructure technology that can have an immediate impact in helping our clients achieve greater efficiencies while realizing significant savings,” said Todd Schneider, Electrorack’s Director of Marketing.  “We took a close look at Opengate’s technology last year, immediately recognized its value, and introduced CoolCirc-IT to our clientele.”

Agriculture and Agri Food Canada (AAFC), which shared the award with Opengate as the end-user of the cooling system, was to grow its data center services approximately 40% with limited infrastructure investment.  Opengate Containment Cooling systems enabled AAFC to quickly meet aggressive growth demands on data center services that were previously not possible given the center’s cooling infrastructure. The result: This highly effective and easy approach has not only allowed IT load increases beyond what was previously possible, but did so without increasing cooling costs.

CoolCirc-IT, which mounts on top of the enclosure, prevents hot exhaust and cold supply air from mixing, making the entire room a cold-air delivery zone and eliminating the need to constantly move floor tiles based on rack loads. Each redundant system utilizes dual-power inputs and two hot-swappable fan modules that easily scale up to 30kW. The modules are equipped with digital displays and LED indicator lights to provide system status and real-time airflow capacity right at the rack.

With data center budgets already stretched thin, a single CoolCirc-IT unit can be leveraged across multiple cabinets to remove the shared heat load. Cabinets are ganged together creating a single shared plenum for exhaust heat. The heat is then removed via a single CoolCirc-IT unit and chimney to the return plenum. This configuration reduces the number of chimneys required versus passive systems that require a chimney on every cabinet. Fewer chimneys reduce light blockage and allow cable ladders to pass across cabinets and aisles.

Each CoolCirc-IT system includes a networking module to provide IP access. The embedded software includes a graphical user interface to easily monitor cooling capacity, temperature, humidity and service life of each fan module. User-defined SNMP traps and alarm thresholds trigger email alerts when levels fall outside of the desired parameters.

CoolCirc-IT maintains a ‘zero-pressure’ environment inside the rack, which is a critical element to prevent overtaxing of server fans and leakage of hot air into the room often found with passive cooling solutions. And because CoolCirc-IT mounts on top of each individual enclosure, it doesn’t consume floor space, and is suitable for deployment in raised-floor or slab environments.

“We were thrilled to see the Uptime Institute validate our decision to launch CoolCirc-IT by bestowing the prestigious GEIT award to Opengate and AAFC,” added Todd.

IT professionals can visit http://www.electrorack.com/active-heat-containment/CoolCi... to learn more and see a video of CoolCirc-IT in action.

Evaluating Kitchen Cabinets, materials, hardware, functional use

When you first decide on remodeling your kitchen most of us go to various kitchen design centers or maybe to our local home center, (Lowes, Home Depot).  We look though kitchen design magazines and if you have an internet connection, we browse some kitchen cabinetry web sites.  This is a great starting point!
Let us start with the basic cabinet itself.  After all, it is really just a box screwed to the wall with some fancy doors and trim.  However, let us look at this box…these are some of the questions you should be asking.

How is it constructed?
Is the cabinet screwed and glued together, dados, dowelled?
•   What type of material is it made of?
Solid wood, plywood, pressboard (partial board) or something else?
•   What about the hardware?
Who makes it?  Does the hardware have user-friendly adjustments?
•   Most important “Is it functional”?
Will my plates, pots and pans, silverware, baking goods etc…all fit in a nice orderly fashion!
Kitchen Cabinet Construction

First, open the cabinet door and see if the bottom shelf is flush with the framework (bottom rail).  Custom and some manufactures of semi-custom cabinets will be. Most if not all standard cabinets will not be.  This is a very important consideration and your designer should point this out.  It is also a price point you should think about.  My reasons for pointing this out is simple, imagine this, your pulling a plate or a glass out of the kitchen cabinet, if there a lip there it is going to catch every time.  Perhaps to the point it slips out of your hand and breaks on the counter-top.

Second, look under the cabinet…many people overlook this!  Here you can see what the cabinet is made of, plywood or pressboard.  In most of my designs, I use pressboard, the reason is its less expensive, and pressboard is now being manufactured using a lot more green technology.  Plywood is always used in damp or humid areas.  All sink cabinets (including the kitchen sink cabinet, the rest of the room will be pressboard construction, major price point!) bathrooms, laundry rooms’ basements etc…  In addition, I like the melamine surface that is applied to the face of the board.

Very easy to clean, doesn’t show marks as finished plywood does.  Just look at the bottom edges of the side panels.  This will tell you what material was used but, also the thickness of the material.  Personally, I would never recommend or suggest anything less than ½” in thickness.  Push on the back panel of the cabinet if it gives way it is most likely made of 1/8” material with hanging rails behind it.  A cabinet with a 3/8” solid back panel not only add more room inside the cabinet but also, in my opinion is a better-built cabinet.

AlliKristé, Opens New Showrooms in Florida

While people in residential construction today might be astonished to hear it, AlliKristé Fine Cabinetry and Kitchen Design is experiencing continued success and growth. The company announced the opening of its fourth showroom located in Jacksonville, Fla. this week at 3653 Regent Blvd., Suite #205.

AlliKristé opened its doors in 1996 and is family-owned and operated. They perform cabinetry and kitchen design installations throughout Florida and selectively across the country. Last year, AlliKristé started working with ActionCOACH Pinellas, a Palm Harbor-based business coaching firm, to help raise their business potential.

“I have never seen our sales team so excited about receiving training,” said Joe Houlton, CEO of AlliKristé. “The ActionCOACH instructors are experienced, practical and frequently challenging to the group when we discuss how to apply what we learn in real life situations.”

This new showroom is only the beginning of what Houlton sees as continued success in the Sunshine State working with the assistance of ActionCOACH Pinellas. His personal business coach, John Lankford, helped him craft a clear sales and marketing plan, and now they have the highest number of quality leads in the company’s eight year history.

“Most business owners probably plan more for their summer vacation than they do for their company’s growth and business development,” said Lankford. “But with some simple planning, AlliKristé now has more quality leads being developed than during the glory days of the construction boom.”

The ActionCOACH model emphasizes the power of crafting written business plans and goals in its curriculum. A study of Harvard MBA graduates showed that after 10 years only 3% of those graduates had written plans and 98% of the wealth were in those 3% graduates who planned.

“Our current strategic planning has us opening an additional showroom in another Florida market by January 2011,” said John Houlton, Joe’s brother and business partner.

At AlliKristé, Joe and John Houlton and Bob Ostrowski, the company’s founder, seek to build relationships with individuals and select industry professionals looking for unique design, high quality custom cabinetry, professional project management and superior installation.  They have design options and custom cabinetry for almost every project, from beach-front penthouses to historic renovations to new hotels or medical facilities.

Whether the project is large or small, residential or commercial, their experienced and creative design staff will listen carefully to customer priorities and provide designs, cabinetry and a level of service that will exceed expectations.
