Several years ago, Slide-Lok of Minnesota recognized that a higher level of training was required to install Slide-Lok’s nationally recognized Polyaspartic Floor Coating System in Minnesota. Brad Madison, one of the owners of Slide-Lok of Minnesota, had completed the formal training at the world headquarters for The Slide-Lok Corporation based in Phoenix, Arizona. Madison said, “The training I went through in Phoenix was great. I learned the fundamentals as it related to putting the Slide-Lok Polyaspartic Garage Floor Coating System down on very ‘easy’ floors.
However, the floors in Arizona do not have the same significant issues we have in Minnesota. So I felt the training did not go far enough. Simply stated, the training director did not understand serious spalling, or major pop-outs or cracks that ran the entire length or depth of a garage. He understood it in a small way, but not what we see almost every day in Minnesota. The first floors I completed, many years ago, were eye openers. The training gave me the basics, but did not deal with the issues I saw on the garage floors of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Over all of the time I have been coating garage floors I have perfected the manner of installing a true three coat polyaspartic garage floor coating in Minnesota.
We have figured it out. It has two elements—we do not play games with the preparation nor do we cut corners with the polyaspartic, i.e., thin the product down or only use two coats. We diamond grind every floor twice. We properly repair all concrete related issues. Then we apply a base coat. After the base coat has cured we install a color coat. While the color coat is still wet we imbed the vinyl chips. After the color coat with the vinyl chips cures we install a clear top coat. Doing it right is one of the reasons we have been in business since 1984.”
Madison continued, “When we brought Kevin on, he went through the same training I did, but we added a significant feature. We harkened back to the old days of true craftsmanship. We had Kevin complete an apprenticeship. Kevin has worked directly with me for over a year. The head knowledge is one thing, but the practical experience of completing a floor where the spalling is nothing short of terrible or there are pop-outs that are 1 ½” deep or a crack that runs front to back that is large enough to insert the tip of one’s finger. Yes, everyday problems in Minnesota, but not an issue in Arizona. But Kevin knows how to deal with these issues and he has graduated from Slide-Lok of Minnesota University and has earned the title of ‘Slide-Lok of Minnesota Polyaspartic Master Floor Installer’.”
