Morgan Creek Cabinet Co, a high-end custom cabinet designer and manufacturer, has been honored with the 2010 Restoration Award given by the Acworth Downtown Building Authority. The award serves to recognize companies or individuals that have made great strides in the restoring Acworth’s historical buildings. Morgan Creek has been manufacturing heirloom-quality cabinets in the Atlanta area for more than thirty years. Acworth, Georgia was chosen as a historical location for the showroom due to its unspoiled charm. The new showroom renovation was completed in late 2009.
The Historical Acworth building, where Morgan Creek Cabinet’s showroom is located, was originally built around 1848 in wood and called “Awtrey’s Corner”. It was later burned down by Sherman during the Civil War in retribution for the locals removing the train tracks between Acworth and Kennesaw to delay the transport of supplies to his troops. The building was then rebuilt in 1885 in brick and used for many different purposes over the years. It has been used to sell horse buggies and chairs, by an inventor, as a dress shop, candy store and glass studio.
“Creating custom cabinetry that is reminiscent of the great craftsmen of Europe has been my goal from day one” stated, Morgan Harrison, the owner of Morgan Creek Cabinet Co. “Some might say I choose Acworth but the building really chose me, the history and the character are a mirror image for our authentic style of cabinets” stated Mr. Harrison.
The building renovation was a natural progression for the craftsman at Morgan Creek. Architects, interior designers, builders and homeowners enjoy the experience of viewing cabinetry in a 19th century building versus a conventional studio. Typically Acworth has suffered, like many small towns, from stagnant economics over the years. “(Acworth) has been fortunate to maintain the architectural integrity of these historical buildings and not lose them to the “strip mall craze” of the 1980-90’s” stated Mr. Harrison.
The renovation of the showroom was ruled by the “less is more” approach. Most of the renovation consisted of removing previous bad renovation decisions and choosing a time period to target with the new renovation. The heart pine front doors have been restored as close to their original condition as possible. The front windows are also original and have been restored to original condition as well.
“We are proud to be participating in the initiative to bring the Downtown Area of Acworth to the forefront of progressive Georgia Cities and hope that everyone can see the dedication, time and energy we have so lovingly put into our showroom. We hope the beauty of the showroom can shine through”.
Morgan Creek Cabinet Company offers full cabinet design services, including kitchen planning, but will perform the designs of others as well, offering design professionals and builders highly-developed resources in cabinet design and technique.
