Rapid Office Furniture's latest call centre installation



When Retail Kudos sent Rapid Office Furniture a selection of images of a call centre desk they liked, Rapid talked them through their specifications and accepted the call centre task. As well as requiring a custom design, Retail Kudos also wanted the setup to fit in with their corporate colours and wanted the new call centre installed as soon as possible.

After conversations between Rapid Office Furniture and Retail Kudos, the specifications and plans were finalised. The first task Rapid had was to negotiate with their regular bespoke office furniture manufacturer and send plans back and fourth for the call centre desks. The process didn't take long and within a few hours the desks were being made.


A common problem with call centre installations occurred in the design of the call centre. With a lot of staff close together and numerous telephone conversations taking place at once, background noise could cause a problem. As usual, Rapid Office Furniture turned to acoustic partitions to overcome the problem. An additional benefit with acoustic partitions, is that they offered a great canvas to continue Retail Kudos' corporate colours.


Retail Kudos also wanted operator chairs which were heavy duty to prevent day-to-day damage. Rapid Office Furniture consulted their brood database of office chair manufacturers and found an ideal chair for Retail Kudos. As well as finding the ideal operator chair, thanks to Rapid's increasing buying power, and that Retail Kudos had approached Rapid to supply all of their call centre furniture, Rapid were able to offer an unbelievable discount on all chairs.

Today’s Business Products Acquires Euclid Office Supply



Today’s Business Products, a supplier of office products and furniture, has acquired Euclid Office Supply Inc., of Euclid, Ohio, announced Richard Voigt, President of Today’s Business Products.

Euclid Office Supply’s operations will be consolidated into Today’s Business Products’ headquarters in Parma, Ohio. Euclid Office Supply, established in 1964, operated a 20,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center with an office furniture showroom.


John Vernier, Owner of Euclid Office Supply, is retiring.


“The acquisition of Euclid Office Supply will further grow our East Side account base that was broadened in 2004 with our acquisition of Office Emporium, in Mayfield Heights, Ohio,” said Voigt. “Euclid Office Supply and Today’s Business Products sell and distribute like products, so this will be a very smooth transition for our customers.”

  • Used Office Furniture Dealers Optimistic About the Future



    A national survey of used office furniture dealers conducted by FurnitureFinders.com, the largest on-line source for new and used office furniture, revealed a number of interesting trends and facts of the state of the industry.    The results were extremely positive.  Over 81% of respondents said their 2011 business was higher than 2010.  The dealers are also optimistic about 2012.  Over 75% of respondents said they are expecting a better year than 2011.

    With the 1st quarter of 2012 coming to a close, 50% of the dealers said they are seeing at least a 10% increase in sales.  Dealers in the Midwest and Southwest are off to the best start in 2012.   Over 60% of the respondents in these areas have seen at least a 10% increase in sales from 2011.  

    When asked for what they have done that caused the greatest impact in their business over the last 2 years, the responses followed common themes.

    1.  Cut Costs, Managed Expenses

    2.  Bought Smarter, Bought Larger Inventories, Found New Sources

    3.  Improved Website

    4.  Hired Additional Salespeople

    5.  Increased Marketing and Advertising

    The dealers also responded that seated privacy cubicles with a height from 45” to 56” are the most requested height and 6' x 6' cubicles the most requested footprint.  Medium cherry finish remains the most popular finish in desks and casegoods.

    Dealers also believe they will continue to see inventory on the market.  Over 80% of respondents believe there will be the same amount to more inventory in 2012. Also, almost 70% of dealers expect pricing to be about the same as 2011.

    When asked about the survey, Niki McDowell, National Director of Furniture Finders said, “The findings are in-line with what we hear from companies looking for office furniture.  Many companies turn to pre-owned office furniture due to costs.  Also, companies like the idea of eliminating waste and doing their part to cut down on the ecological footprint and being a good steward to the environment.  We see companies that have never looked at purchasing used furniture in the past  exploring it as an option.”

    •High-back or Mid-back?  When it comes right down to it, back height is a matter of personal preference.  Many companies will standardize on a specific chair line for a unified appearance but utilized the different back heights to designate position.

    Door Furniture Direct Combat Breaking Screw Heads with Door Handle DIY Guide



    The guide is designed to help DIY enthusiasts avoid breaking off screw head when installing door handles.
    Since the screw head is exposed on the door handle, it not only serves a purpose but also contributes to the appearance of the finished product. For this reason most are plated to match the door, but despite their appearance virtually all are made of brass. Brass is a soft metal, and screws for door handles are small; meaning that great care must be taken when installing them.

    The step by step guide from Door Furniture Direct recommends a series of techniques which will safeguard the screws from damage. It is assumed within these guidelines that door latches and locks have already been installed.

    The Door Furniture Direct Guidelines are as follows:


    1. With the door handle held in the fixing position, carefully mark the position for one screw (say the top right if you are right handed). Your mark needs to be dead centre of the fixing hole and the handle needs to be in the correct fitting position with the spindle inserted and properly aligned. Dead centre can usually be found with the taper on a pencil tip or with a tapered centre punch.

    2. Remove the handle away from the door and drill an appropriate size pilot hole exactly on your mark. Ensure the drill does not skid off the mark when doing this (risk of door damage!). It can be helpful to make an indent in the wood with a bradawl and use a split point drill bit.

    3. The pilot hole will be slightly smaller than the screw diameter to give the fixing screw some bite, but do not put the finished screw in yet.

    4. Obtain a steel self-tapping screw the same size and length as the installation wood screws. Companies like Heritage Brass provide this screw in their fixing packs; you can locate it by the different zinc plated finish and it will be threaded all the way to the head. With the handle off the door, screw this screw into the pilot hole to cut a thread for the fixing screw. Take care and use the correct size screw driver when doing this, since there is a risk of door damage if the screw driver slips off.

    5. Place the handle back onto the door with the spindle inserted and carefully start to fit the single installation fixing screw. It should thread into the pre-cut thread easily without any undue force. Do not fully tighten the screw yet, just take it into the countersink while you carefully line up the handle, then just gently grip the handle in place with the screw.

    6. Once lined up, mark the remaining screw positions as before in a dead centre position. Now remove the single installation screw and the handle from the door and you can repeat the process; drilling pilot holes and cutting threads for each screw using the steel self-tapping screw. Depending on how confident you are about the positions, you may wish to just do one further hole and check the other marks before drilling them. You may need a small torch to see the marks inside the handle fixing holes.

    7. With all threads cut, the handle can be screwed to the door with the finished fixing installation screws. Use the correct size screw driver and do not over tighten. If resistance is felt do not force the screw, remove it and investigate. A screwdriver slip, typically caused by undue force, will likely scratch your handle!

    Science and Public Health duped on RIP cigarettes: Hemant Goswami



    Speaking at the International Conference on Prevention of Tobacco Induced Diseases, currently in progress at Little Rock, Arkansas (USA), Hemant Goswami the leading public health and social activist from India, asked the global scientific community to be more vigilant and alert before embracing the concepts like “Fire Safe Cigarettes.” Speaking on the subject of “Reduced Ignition Propensity Cigarettes – Facts, Fiction and Manipulations” Goswami made his case by analyzing the tobacco industry videos and document to point towards a clear strategic push by a big tobacco multinational which ultimately managed to strategically influence and convince one of the US states to adopt the concept of fire-safe cigarettes. Using the adoption of fire-safe standards by New York as an example, the notion has now caught up in many other States and countries.

    “We must do independent primary research before accepting and adopting concepts like fire-safe cigarettes, (also called Reduced Ignition Propensity Cigarettes [RIP]) which are claimed to be less likely to catch indoor structural fires if left unattended. Such concepts have been only tested from the fire-safety point of view and no independent study has still been undertaken by the scientific or public health community to assess the effect of the engineered modifications in RIP cigarettes.

    The scientific community must do independent primary study to get a clear idea about things like, the effect on Nicotine delivery due to change in mass burn rate, paper porosity, chemical coatings, banding pattern manipulation on RIP; the increased toxicity levels in RIP; puff-to-puff count and changes in actual human puffing and inhalation of RIP so as to assess it’s effect on current smokers and know about any increase in addictiveness and other changes,” Hemant emphasised.

    Elaborating further on the issue, Hemant said, “The scientific community and the legislatives were highly vulnerable to the manipulation and rigging by the tobacco industry as was evident from the Bates document which show that the tobacco company Phillip Morris had undertaken secret studies code named as “Project Tomorrow,” “Project Hamlet,” “Project Delta,” etc. with an intention to develop a patented cigarette paper technology which could give it’s business the cutting edge and reduce the competition in the market.

    The company actually succeeded in its objective by developing such a patented cigarette paper and by managing to manipulate and strategically push it through the scientific and public health community in the name of “Reduced Ignition Propensity” cigarettes. The patented paper and the testing method developed by Phillip Morris (On which ASTM standard E2187-02b have been modelled) actually have been adopted in its totality in the name of fire-safe cigarettes. Such tactic has already increased the market share of the big tobacco in the New York by eliminating the smaller and unorganised tobacco industry players.”

    There has been a dangerous cross-over as now many health departments across the globe are adopting RIP as fire-safe cigarette standards, unconcerned and unmindful of the fact that the initial concept of RIP was tested by the NY fire-safety department and the modification were also approved by the fire-safety department and not the health department. This crossing over of the concept from the fire safety departments to public health department is the biggest slip and manipulation ever in tobacco control.

    The analysis of the structural fire related fatalities in NY also show that there has been no reduction in the fire-related deaths as was initially claimed. Moreover, contrary to popular belief, RIP cigarettes actually offer no protection from the California like forest fires.
